Feast Your Eyes on This Beautiful Linguistic Family Tree

Feast Your Eyes on This Beautiful Linguistic Family Tree
by Arika Okrent

When linguists talk about the historical relationship between languages, they use a tree metaphor. An ancient source (say, Indo-European) has various branches (e.g., Romance, Germanic), which themselves have branches (West Germanic, North Germanic), which feed into specific languages (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian). Lessons on language families are often illustrated with a simple tree diagram that has all the information but lacks imagination. There’s no reason linguistics has to be so visually uninspiring. Minna Sundberg, creator of the webcomic Stand Still. Stay Silent, a story set in a lushly imagined post-apocalyptic Nordic world, has drawn the antidote to the boring linguistic tree diagram.

COLOURS TO AVOID IN HOME FENG SHUI

Proper selection of colours does matter in enhancing your home Feng Shui and there are also some colours that you must avoid at all cost in order not to get into colour trap. In this post, I will share with you on the colour to avoid and the meaning behind it too.

Avoiding The Wrong Colour For Your Home Feng Shui

Avoid Pink In Bedroom

Some people like to paint pink in bedroom because they like the romantic feeling but in home Feng Shui, it is being categorized as one of the fatal <大凶> . Pink colour tends to create the problem of third party interference, married couple relationship worsen, so do avoid in pink, especially in master bedroom.

Avoid Blue in Your Home

If you know a bit of English, you will know that blue represent a gloomy feeling, heard of "Monday Blue"? In fact, in the eastern side of the world, blue has the same temperament as it give a negative dull and gloomy feel. In the aspect of Feng Shui, blue give the lacking feeling of safety and security.

Take care When Use Black In Your House

Black is a colour choice that is out of place when you use in your house. Black colour is in the element of water when come in Feng Shui and also symbolize death and stillness. If you really want to be different, be sure to control the proportion of the black tone. Many designers will recommend the use of black in small area in the bathroom space.

Avoid Red Colour at All Cost In Home Feng Shui

Using big red in your house will give a visual feeling of overburdened. If you live in a glowing red house for a period of time, you will bound to have headache and causing people to act on impulse. Although red is not the colour to be use in wall, it still can be use in small furniture.

Gold Colour Lead to Nervousness

Gold represent noble and royal, but people will not like to have a house full of golden armour <满屋黄金甲>. Beside being too "Bling Bling" , it easily lead to nervousness and emotional depression.

Uniqueness does not play well in Feng Shui

It is not always good to be unique by decorating your house with wallpaper or curtain filled with beast and skeleton or any other unharmonious objects because it is deemed bad in Feng Shui perspective. It will tend to cause discomfort and easiness, so try to use colour that is mild and light, especially in the ceiling.

Only Lively Green is Good

Green is an indispensable colour in a home but it is always good to have natural green like planting, instead of painting the whole wall with green.

Coffee Brown Not Suitable in Children Room and Dining Area

Elegant coffee brown seem wild, but in overall, it is still slightly dull, So it is best not to use the children's room or dining room. If you add a little high-brightness white or beige mix, then brown is a good choice.

Getting The Scare Out of Yellow

For those who suffer mental distress, yellow is a taboo colour to be use as it is too lively. If you choose yellow as the primary colour of your home, it will give you a feeling of being disturbed.

Do Not Use Orange Colour in Bedroom

Orange colour can be used in the dining area to increase your appetite, it can also used in the living room to bring up the liveliness, but never use orange in your bedroom. If not, you will suffer from insomnia.

Types of bikinis

Wired or halter bikini top with thick straps- if you have larger chests
Pushup or padded bikini tops – if you don’t have larger chests
Triangle bikini tops –  if you are not too busty, as these type of tops don’t offer too much support.
Boy shorts – to show off long and lean legs and that great behind, but also offers more coverage.
Tankinis – to cover a mid-section
Monokinis – these one piece swimsuits are best suited for more curvy bodies like an apple or hour glass shape. This swimsuit isn’t too flattering on bodies without curves or athletic built bodies.
Side-tie bottoms – if you have wider hips, these bottoms make it easy to adjust to what’s comfortable. These bottoms are also great for drawing attention to hips for skinnier girls without curves.
Strapless bandeau tops – ideal for triangle-shaped bodies with smaller chests
Printed vs. solid colors – bright colored busy patterns tend to draw more attention while dark sold colors do the opposite. Be wise in which you select for your bikini.
Ruffles, lacy details, bow ties – These embellishments to bikinis add more interest and volume, therefore adding curves to a boxy figure.
Mix and match tops and bottoms –  Be bold and mix and match prints with solids! If you are heavier on top, go for a solid color top and printed bottoms. If you are heavier on bottom, you don’t want to attract too much attention to this area so opt for solid bottoms and a floral or decorative top.

Ring Size Chart

Ring Sizing Tips

For You: Thermal expansion is the tendency of things to expand as they get warmer and shrink with the cold. Funny as it sounds, the same thing happens to fingers. If it’s time to size a ring, first make sure your finger is at a nice and normal body temperature. That done, check to see if your knuckle is much larger than your finger’s base. If it is, take two separate measurements and choose a size in between. You want a ring to fit over your knuckle, but not be too loose (a loose ring is almost as sad as a lost ring)!

METHOD 1 - Measure Your Finger & Find Your Size

  • Step 1 - Find a piece of non stretchy string or paper about 6" long and 1/4" wide.
  • Step 2 - Wrap it around the base of your finger. It has to fit snug, but not too tight.
  • Step 3 - Mark the point on the string/ paper where it overlaps forming a complete circle.
  • Step 4 - Compare the length of the string/ paper to the images below. That is your ring size.

*If you are between sizes, order a larger size.

Ring Size Chart

You may also print the downloadable sizer to use it as a measurement tool.

For Someone Else: Measuring rings for another person takes stealth. The easiest, most accurate way is to quietly take a ring he or she wears often and compare it to our Method 2 size chart.

METHOD 2 - Measure Your Ring & Find Your Size

Place a ring that fits you over the closest matching sized circle, make sure the inside of the ring lines up with the outside of the circle. If you are between sizes, order a larger size.

If the person doesn’t have a ring you can borrow for measurement, you may have to amp up the ninja factor. If you live with the person, you can try to use Method 1 on his or her ring finger during sleep, but that might not give you an accurate reading. To avoid spoiling the surprise, try asking friends or family members. If you can get a rough estimate, just buy more than one size and keep the one that fits best. We are happy to accept returns within 30 days and we know how to keep a secret!

Recipe : Lemony Cream Cheese Pancakes with Blueberries

Lemony Cream Cheese Pancakes with Blueberries

Serves 6

  • 1 1/2cups flour
  • 1tablespoon sugar
  • 1tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2teaspoon baking soda
  • 1pinch salt
  • 2large eggs, separated
  • 1cup buttermilk
  • 6ounces cream cheese, cut up
  • 3teaspoons melted butter
  • 1teaspoon vanilla
  • 2tablespoons lemon juice
  • Zest of one large lemon
  • 1 1/2cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, sugar baking powder, baking soda, salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, buttermilk. Add cream cheese and mix until cream cheese has separated into uniformly small lumps, about the size of large cottage cheese curds. Stir in melted butter, vanilla, lemon juice and lemon zest.
  2. Add dry ingredients to wet, then stir to combine. Whisk two egg whites until stiff but not dry; fold gently into batter.
  3. Heat a griddle or cast iron pan over medium high heat, until a drop of water sizzles. Lower heat to medium; butter or oil pan. Drop batter into pan by 1/3 cupfuls. Once the batter has spread, drop in the berries. You might want to drizzle some batter to cover them. These need to be cooked a bit longer than you might expect; they won't bubble as quickly or as much as plain pancakes. Turn down the heat if necessary, to keep them from overbrowning, and let them puff up to their full extent after you turn them, which will take 2-3 minutes. Serve with honey or maple syrup or jam.

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About

There have got to be a few things in life you've always wondered about. I'm not necessarily talking about the answer to life (42) or anything big picture like that, I'm talking about small things you encounter in your daily life. Like when you take a shower that lasts way too long and your fingers become pruney - why is that? I thought it maybe had something to do with absorbing the water, but I've never been quite sure... until now.

Here are 15 answers to things you've always wondered about (including why your fingers prune in the shower):

1. If our blood is red, why are our veins blue?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 0 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

No matter what people try to tell you, our blood is always red. So why do our veins look blue? It's because there are different wavelengths with different properties hitting our arm when we look at it. The blue light just happens to be absorbed by the blood and make it back to your eye.

2. Why does turkey make you tired?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 3 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

The answer: it doesn't. Contrary to popular belief, it's not the tryptophan (an amino acid that makes up the brain chemicals that make you tired) in the turkey that makes you sleepy. It's actually the sheer amount of food and beverage you've consumed during your holiday meal.

3. Why can't you hear a singer's accent in a song?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 6 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Without hearing the Spice Girls in an interview, you probably wouldn't have guessed they were British (unless you took a look at their outfits!). This has everything to do with phonetics and cadence. Singers who speak with an accent are forced to completely lose it when they have to stress certain syllables in a song and elongate their vowels. The result ends up sounding almost "American."

4. Why do we crave greasy food when we're hungover?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 9 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Almost everyone craves a big ol' plate of greasy food after a night of drinking, but why? It's high in fat, high in calories, and you'd probably never eat any other time. The reason behind this craving is a brain chemical called galanin, which increases your appetite for fats. Since alcohol increases your body's production of galanin, you're going to want that big fat breakfast pronto.

5. Why is the drinking age 21?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 12 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

You can thank the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 for this one. So while it's largely up to each state to decide their legal drinking age, this law told these states that they had to enact a minimum drinking age of 21 or else they would lose 10% of their highway funding. Since no state wanted to give up that funding, that means that no one under the age of 21 can legally purchase or publicly possess alcohol.

6. What's the difference between "&" and "and" in movie credits?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 15 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

The ampersand (&) means that two writers worked together to write the script, whereas "and" means that one writer re-wrote the others' work.

7. Why can't we decide if tomatoes are fruits or vegetables?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 18 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

It looks like a vegetable, but it's classified as a fruit. Or is it the other way around? The tomato is technically a fruit since it protects and contains the seeds of its plant, but according to a Supreme Court ruling, is is classified as a vegetable. Why? The Tariff Act of March 3, 1883 required a tax to be paid on imported vegetables, but not fruit, and they didn't want any tomato farmers going untaxed.

8. Why do we say "cheese" when we get our pictures taken?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 21 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

The origin is unknown, but when you say "cheese," the act of saying the word turns the corners of your mouth lift up, your cheeks lift, and you show off a toothy grin.

9. What is it about showers and creative thoughts?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 24 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Our best ideas come to us in the shower because its a mindless task. Since your shower routine doesn't require much thought, it frees your mind to wander and think of something else.

10. Why is the sky blue?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 27 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Much like our veins appear blue, it has everything to do with wavelengths and blue light. Blue light scatters more than the other colors in the spectrum because it travels as shorter, smaller waves.

11. Why do different languages call countries by different names?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 30 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Most of us know Germany as, well, Germany. But to the Germans, they known their homeland as Deutschland. The simplest explanation is that languages pre-date countries, sometimes by centuries. So when small settlements joined together to create countries, like Germany, there were multiple names for the region, depending on the language. It's all in who you know.

12. Why do our fingers get wrinkly in the shower?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 33 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

Scientists have figured out why our fingers and toes get wrinkly during bathtime. It actually has nothing to do with absorbing the water, and everything to do with improving our grip on things underwater. Think of it like the treads in a tire giving a much better grip in slippery conditions. The human body is amazing.

13. Why does the letter U almost always accompany the letter Q?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 36 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

The reason for this pairing is because QU is a digraph, which is a pair of letters that represents a single sound. In this case, it's "kw." Basically, the two are treated as a single character in the English language, mostly from borrowed words from Latin. Q's without U's aren't as common, but can be found in words like Iraq.

14. How do magnets work?

"Magnets: how do they work?" Actually, The Insane Clown Posse asked a good question. According to Northeastern University, a magnet is simply any object that produces its own magnetic field and interacts with other magnetic field. Magnets have two poles (north and south) and the magnetic field starts and the north pole and ends at the south pole.

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 11 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

So if you have two magnets next to each other, and their north poles are facing each other, you will feel them repel. And when you place a north pole next to a south pole, they will attract. Science.

15. Why do we have eyebrows?

15 Answers To Things You've Always Wondered About 42 - https://www.facebook.com/diplyofficial

You have to pluck them and prune them, so why do they even exist? Aside from being a very distinct feature on your face that helps you communicate, there's actually a very good reason eyebrows exist. If you've ever run longer than to catch a bus, you know just how sweaty your forehead can get - sweat can even drip down into your eyes and cause temporary blindness. And that's why your eyebrows exist. Consider them a built-in headband!
